Petula Burks
Petula Celeste Burks is a public relations and communications executive with over 15 years of experience impacting organizations’ presence and performance nationally.
After spending nearly, a decade in local government handling media relations, growing social media presence, standardizing marketing and messaging, working closely with the administration and elected officials, coordinating, producing, and marketing events, researching and gathering information, facilitating public meetings, creating/writing policies and procedures and representing the organization(s) in both formal and informal settings, Petula changed her focus.
Now public health is her new realm of expertise as the Director of the Center for Public Affairs with Washington State Department of Health. Petula is responsible for convening collaborative project circles for in-depth discussion around policy, community relations, health equity, and communication regarding health issues affecting the lives of Washingtonians. Understanding that public health plays a part of all our lives in different ways is key to doing this work. Making public health relatable to the public, elected officials, and influencers is vitally important to funding, research, problem-solving, and most significantly to changing behavior. Petula brings a personal passion to this work and has a desire to challenge others to find their public health why. From cancer to diabetes, drinking water to shellfish, opioids to salmonella outbreaks – public health is everywhere and affects everyone.
Petula holds a bachelor’s degree in broadcast journalism/communication from Brenau University. She is a member of PRSA, 3CMA, GAE and NEA, and the National Association of Professional Women. She was selected as one of Broward County’s 40 Under 40 Most Influential African Americans by Legacy Magazine, was named a Woman of the Year by the National Association of Professional Women and most recently was selected as one of Miami-Dade County’s Most Powerful Leaders by MIA Magazine.
